Nigeria’s political landscape was plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and distinguished departure of Senator Okey Ezea, the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, who passed away recently. The news of his death on November 18, 2025, sparked a wave of heartfelt tributes, most notably from the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, and the entire Obidient Movement, both of whom have pledged to honour his memory by continuing the fight for a New Nigeria.
The late Senator, a prominent figure in the 10th Senate elected on the platform of the Labour Party, was mourned as a man of impeccable character, a true patriot, and a fearless warrior for justice.
The Obidient Movement’s Condolence: A Vow Not to Surrender
In a deeply moving Condolence Letter dated 19/11/2025 and signed by the National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement expressed profound sorrow over the loss of their “brother, friend, leader, and patriot.”
The letter began: “It is with the deepest sorrow and heavy heart that I write this letter on behalf of millions of Obidients in Nigeria and the Diaspora to mourn the sudden and painful departure of our brother, friend, leader, and patriot, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea.”
The movement eulogized Senator Ezea as a man whose political life was a testament to courage and conviction: “He was conscience in suit, courage in flesh, and truth in action.”
His unwavering support for the ideals of a New Nigeria, where justice, equity, and fairness reign, was a central theme of the tribute. Addressing the Senator’s immediate family, the Movement offered an unprecedented assurance of solidarity, stating: “To his dear wife and children, words are too poor at this moment to console you, but please know this your husband and father did not belong only to you, he belonged to all of us, and we are grieving with you as one family. The entire Obidient Movement has adopted you. You will never walk alone. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, we are here today, tomorrow, and always.”
To the people of Enugu North and Enugu State, the letter added: “His legacy is now your sacred inheritance. Guard it jealously. We commit, before God and man, that the vision Senator Okey Ezea lived and died for a Nigeria that works for all Nigerians… will never die. We will continue the struggle. We will honour him by refusing to surrender. We will make him proud.”
Peter Obi’s Personal Devastation: A Loss of a Dear Brother
Separately, the leader of the Movement and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi (PO), shared his raw, personal grief, describing the news as one of the “most devastating pieces of news of my life.”
In a tribute titled ‘Remembering Senator Ezea: A Friend, Confidant, and Brother,’ Mr. Obi highlighted the profound personal void left by the Senator’s passing.
He confessed: “What can I say about him? He was my Senator, my confidant, my friend, and my brother. Sen. Ezea was a man of remarkable integrity, a man who did not betray friendship, and a man of deep compassion for his people.” Obi noted that Senator Ezea’s presence “inspired confidence, and his counsel was always wise and measured.”
He added, poignantly, that “Okey would always remind one of the need to do things for his people.” The former Presidential Candidate confessed, “His passing leaves a huge personal void that cannot easily be filled.”
Mr. Obi concluded his statement by praying, “May the Almighty God, who has called him home, grant him eternal rest; and may his family, together with the good people of Enugu State, find strength and consolation at this difficult time.”
The two powerful messages underscore the significance of Senator Ezea’s role in the new wave of Nigerian politics. Both the party leader and the broader movement have not only mourned the loss of a key figure but have also re-affirmed their commitment to the political ideals for which he fought tirelessly in the Red Chamber.
Senator Okey Ezea’s life was described as one that “created a vacuum that cannot be filled in the Senate, not in the Labour Party, not in the Obidient Movement, and certainly not in the hearts of those of us who were privileged to walk this journey with him.” The condolences from Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement serve as a powerful signal that the battle for the ideals championed by the late Senator will not be abandoned.
