The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has raised alarm over what it calls the dangerous and unacceptable deployment of the Nigeria Police Force in the escalating leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, the group warned that the disturbing scenes recorded at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja represent a new low in the misuse of state institutions for political battles.

Signed by Olawale Okunniyi (Veteran Che), Head of Secretariat of the MCE, the statement condemned the conduct of police officers who were reportedly seen openly supporting rival factions during the confrontation between the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Mr. Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and the faction loyal to the removed Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed. Mohammed is alleged to have the backing of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Describing the development as “unheard of and totally unacceptable,” the group criticised the police for physically aligning with political actors in a dispute that should have remained an internal party matter. MCE linked the incident to the recent viral video of the FCT Minister’s altercation with a military officer, where police personnel were seen charging at soldiers over a disputed property in Abuja.

According to the organisation, the two incidents form a clear pattern of institutional degradation driven by what it termed “executive lawlessness.” It warned that such repeated misuse of state security agencies poses a grave danger to Nigeria’s democratic future and further weakens public trust ahead of the 2027 general elections.

MCE called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently rein in the conduct of the FCT Minister and restore professionalism across the security services. It stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to allow political clashes within the ruling class to drag the country into a state of disorder or instability.

“The ongoing actions of the political elite amount to a direct attack on Democracy and a threat to national cohesion,” the statement declared. The group urged citizens to unite behind its mission to protect democratic institutions from political interference. “We must all rise to say no to executive impunity and the reckless abuse of state power by the Nigerian ruling class,” MCE noted.

The pro-democracy organisation reaffirmed its readiness to mobilise Nigerians nationwide to safeguard the electoral system, security institutions, and the broader democratic process from further erosion.
