A leading Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North Central Zone, Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing the move as a bold step towards equity, inclusion, and national balance.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, Hon. Ajiya said the unanimous approval of Prof. Amupitan’s nomination by the National Council of State underscores the President’s commitment to fairness and recognition of the North Central region’s longstanding contributions to the Nigerian project.

“This appointment is not just a victory for the North Central region but for all Nigerians who believe in competence, merit, and justice,” Hon. Ajiya said.

“For the first time, someone from our region will head INEC. This shows President Tinubu’s genuine resolve to correct historical imbalances and give every part of Nigeria a true sense of belonging,” Hon. Ajiya added.

He described the new INEC Chairman as a distinguished academic and legal luminary whose impeccable record of service and integrity has prepared him for the task of reforming and strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

“Professor Amupitan is a man of honour, intellect, and proven character,” Ajiya noted. “I am confident he will uphold professionalism, transparency, and accountability in INEC, ensuring that elections truly reflect the will of the people.”

The APC chieftain urged Nigerians—especially citizens of the North Central zone—to support President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing that the ongoing national reforms are aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable growth and prosperity.

“We know the reforms are tough, but they are necessary sacrifices for Nigeria’s long-term recovery,” he said. “President Tinubu is rebuilding our national foundation, and with patience and unity, we will all reap the benefits soon.”

Hon. Ajiya further charged Professor Amupitan to live up to public expectations by protecting the independence and credibility of the electoral body.

“This appointment is a call to service, not celebration,” he stressed. “Professor Amupitan must stand firm, resist political pressure, and lead INEC with courage and integrity. The future of our democracy depends on his leadership.”

Concluding, Hon. Ajiya praised President Tinubu’s inclusive leadership style and renewed commitment to fairness and competence, expressing optimism that Nigeria is on the path to democratic renewal.

“The appointment of Professor Amupitan is another testament to President Tinubu’s vision for a just, equitable, and progressive nation,” he said. “The North Central and all Nigerians should unite behind him to move our country forward.”
