As the holiday season sets in, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has sounded the alarm, urging the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around power installations in their vicinity. This call to action comes amidst a growing concern over the increasing menace of power infrastructure vandalism in Nigeria.
The country has witnessed a surge in vandalism of power installations in recent years, resulting in significant disruptions to electricity supply and economic losses. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that vandalism of power infrastructure has become a major challenge to the country’s power sector, with an estimated N3 billion lost annually due to vandalism.
In a statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, the company urged the public to be observant of any unusual activity around power installations in their vicinity. “Vandals targeting power installations may take advantage of the season’s festivities. It is therefore crucial that we remain attentive. If you notice any suspicious behaviour, please report immediately to the nearest security operative or any TCN office close to you,” the statement read.
TCN emphasized that the company is committed to ensuring stable and uninterrupted bulk power supply to distribution load centres throughout the holiday period and beyond. However, the company noted that it cannot achieve this goal without the support of the public in safeguarding power installations.
The call for vigilance by TCN is a clear indication of the gravity of the situation. The company’s appeal for public support in protecting power installations is a testament to the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in addressing the menace of vandalism.
As the holiday season approaches, it is essential that Nigerians remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around power installations. By working together, we can safeguard our critical power infrastructure and ensure a joyful holiday season.
The Management and Staff of TCN have wished Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous holiday season and a happy New Year in advance.
