New details have surfaced regarding the closure of the entrance gate to the palace of Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, on Friday. Although the Nigeria Police have not officially commented, a reliable source revealed that the law enforcement action aimed to prevent disorder in Bichi town, where Emir Sanusi was scheduled to install a district head.
An anonymous source, according to reports, indicated that Bichi residents had allegedly planned to obstruct the installation. Security forces, sensing potential unrest, intervened to stop the Emir from attending the event. This move was also intended to deter prominent figures from visiting Bichi for the same occasion.
Reports suggest that many Bichi residents opposed the installation, questioning the logic behind appointing a district head. They felt the installation would degrade the town’s status. Following the dissolution of five Emirate councils by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Bichi was excluded from receiving a second-class emir, unlike other towns.
Residents expressed that their resistance stemmed from the perceived demotion of their kingdom, now to be governed by a district head while other towns are led by second-class emirs.
Some stakeholders believe the police intervention might have averted a significant crisis in Bichi, potentially affecting surrounding communities and the state capital.
By 7 a.m. on Friday, heavily armed police had secured the entrance to Emir Sanusi’s Kofar Kudu palace.
