A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in the GTBank cyberstalking case, as three Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) have joined the defense team of four journalists accused of cyberstalking and defamation against Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) and its CEO, Segun Agbaje. The journalists, Precious Eze, Olawale Rotimi, Rowland Olonishuwa, and Seun Odunlami, have been held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre since September.
The case took a surprising turn when Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court denied the bail application for the four defendants, citing affidavits from both the defense and prosecution teams. This development comes as GTCO faces mounting legal challenges, including an investigation into allegations of corruption, falsification of financial reports, and money laundering against Segun Agbaje.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has directed GTCO to remit the Value Added Tax on commissions received from Remita transactions between 2015 and 2022 to the Federal Government. The bank’s Executive Director, Ahmed Liman, admitted that GTCO had not remitted the VAT for eight years.
As the trial continues, concerns about cyberstalking and its implications on personal safety have come to the forefront. Cyberstalking is a growing concern, with approximately 7.5 million people experiencing it each year.
The case against the four journalists has sparked heated debate about the intersection of technology, law, and individual rights.
The defense team’s efforts to prove the journalists’ innocence will be closely watched as the case unfolds.
With the addition of three seasoned SANs to the defense team, the stage is set for a dramatic and closely contested trial.
