In a move that has raised eyebrows, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has been elected as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The election, held during the Union’s Quadrennial Delegate Conference in Osogbo, saw MC Oluomo emerge as the sole candidate, securing unanimous votes from all delegates.
MC Oluomo’s rise to power is largely attributed to his close ties with President Bola Tinubu, whom he has publicly declared loyalty to.
In fact, he has gone on record to say that Tinubu “owns” him and that he would support whatever the President wants.
This loyalty was on full display during the 2023 Lagos governorship election, where MC Oluomo sparked controversy by warning Igbo people to stay home if they didn’t plan to vote for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates.
Despite the backlash, MC Oluomo claimed his statement was a joke, and the Nigerian Police Force eventually downplayed the incident.
However, many see his election as NURTW National President as a reward for his loyalty to Tinubu and the APC.
In his acceptance speech, MC Oluomo struck a conciliatory tone, pleading for forgiveness for past wrongdoings and urging unity among Union members.
“I have forgiven everyone that offends me, and I wish those I offended would forgive me as well,” he said. “This is our union, and we must be committed to its preservation. We will not allow anyone to destroy our means of livelihood.”
As MC Oluomo takes the reins, many will be watching to see how he balances his loyalty to Tinubu with the needs of the NURTW and its members.
Will his presidency bring stability and growth to the Union, or will his controversial past continue to cast a shadow? Only time will tell.
