A potentially disastrous fire outbreak was contained at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, after a crane caught fire, thanks to the swift response of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and APM Terminals.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, and operations at the port continued uninterrupted. APM Terminals expressed gratitude to the NPA Management and Fire Service for their prompt assistance, stating, “We extend our sincere gratitude to the NPA Management and NPA Fire Service for their prompt assistance in managing the situation.”
APM Terminals confirmed that the safety of employees, partners, and the surrounding community is their top priority. “We are pleased to confirm that all personnel are safe, with no injuries or fatalities reported. Our stringent safety measures played a critical role in preventing any harm,” the company said in a statement.
A thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. “We appreciate the support and understanding of our stakeholders during this time and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence,” APM Terminals added.
NPA Spokesman Ikechukwu Onyemekara praised the NPA firemen for their professionalism and thanked God that no lives were lost. “We’re grateful for the prompt response of our firemen, which prevented what could have been a major disaster,” Onyemekara said.
Onyemekara assured port users and stakeholders that the current NPA management, led by Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, prioritizes safety and aims to enhance the ease of doing business in Nigerian ports. “The safety of life and property remains our top priority, and we’ll continue to work tirelessly to ensure a secure and efficient port environment.”
The swift response and effective safety measures in place averted a potentially catastrophic incident, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and preparedness in preventing disasters.
