The Save Enugu Group (SEG) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of renowned traditional Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, by a police inspector at the Enugu Police Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad Headquarters on October 25, 2024.
This senseless act has sparked widespread outrage and demands for comprehensive reforms within Nigeria’s security agencies ¹.
Hon. Pascal Okolo, JP, Publicity Secretary of the Save Enugu Group, emphasized that the killing is a stark reminder of the persistent issue of police brutality. The SEG extends its deepest condolences to the people of Enugu State, Igbo-Jah’s family, and friends, whose life was tragically cut short.
The identified officer, Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, must face the full weight of the law, and the SEG demands that he be prosecuted to the fullest extent to serve as a deterrent to other officers. The group insists that justice must not only be done but seen to be done, to restore public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
The SEG commended Governor Peter Mbah’s swift response in demanding justice for Igbo-Jah, demonstrating a commitment to justice and accountability. The group urged the state government to continue supporting measures enhancing police professionalism and accountability.
“The Save Enugu Group remains committed to advocating for the rights and safety of all citizens,” SEG reassured. “We will continue to monitor this case closely and ensure that justice is served.” Igbo-Jah’s legacy will live on through justice and reforms, as emphasized by Okolo: “This senseless killing must not be swept under the carpet”.
