The Save Enugu Group (SEG) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of renowned traditional Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, by a police inspector at the Enugu Police Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad Headquarters on October 25, 2024.
“This heinous act is a stark reminder of the persistent issue of police brutality and the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within our security agencies,” said Hon. Pascal Okolo, JP, Publicity Secretary of the Save Enugu Group.
The SEG extends its deepest condolences to the people of Enugu State, the family, and friends of Igbo-Jah, whose life was tragically cut short. “We stand in solidarity with the grieving family and the entire Enugu community during this difficult time,” SEG added.
The group demands justice for Igbo-Jah’s senseless killing, emphasizing that the identified officer, Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, “must face the full weight of the law.” SEG stressed, “We demand that he be prosecuted to the fullest extent to serve as a deterrent to other officers who might contemplate such reckless actions for whatever reasons.”
The SEG insists that “justice is not only done but seen to be done, to restore public confidence in our law enforcement agencies.” SEG noted, “The killing of innocent citizens by security agents in Enugu State and the entire South East of Nigeria must be brought to an immediate end.”
To prevent similar occurrences, the SEG recommends reforms, including enhanced training, body cameras for police officers, independent oversight bodies, and community policing initiatives. the group explained, “We recommend regular and comprehensive training on the use of force, conflict de-escalation, and human rights, coupled with routine psychological assessments for all officers.”
Governor Peter Mbah’s swift response in demanding justice for Igbo-Jah was commended by the SEG. The socio-political pressure group stated, “The Governor’s immediate call for a comprehensive investigation demonstrates a commitment to justice and accountability.”
The SEG urged the state government to continue supporting measures that enhance police professionalism and accountability. SEG reassured, “The Save Enugu Group remains committed to advocating for the rights and safety of all citizens. We will continue to monitor this case closely and ensure that justice is served.”
The group’s strong stance reflects the widespread outrage and demand for change in the wake of Igbo-Jah’s tragic death. As Okolo emphasized, “This senseless killing must not be swept under the carpet. We will ensure that Igbo-Jah’s legacy lives on through justice and reforms.”
