Cardinal John Onaiyekan, former Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s economic crisis, emphasizing the need for a policy review to alleviate the suffering of the middle class.

Speaking on the sidelines of a Marian Concert in Abuja, Onaiyekan stressed that Nigerians are reaching their breaking point, exhausted by the relentless struggle to make ends meet.

“There is a limit to what people can handle,” Onaiyekan said. “You can’t tell someone to be patient with poverty while we see the people who are supposed to address our poverty live flamboyantly, building huge mansions and having fleets of cars without caring how they are fuelled, whereas the rest of us are queuing to get a few litres of fuel.”

Onaiyekan warned that the current economic hardship is unprecedented, wiping out the middle class and plunging everyone into poverty. He emphasized that Nigerians are not accustomed to this level of suffering.

The former Archbishop’s concerns highlight the growing discontent with the government’s economic policies, which have led to increased economic hardship. The policies have resulted in skyrocketing prices, inflation, and a declining standard of living.

Onaiyekan’s call for a policy review resonates with many Nigerians, who are struggling to survive amidst the economic downturn. The government is under pressure to balance economic reforms with social welfare considerations to prevent further hardship.

As the economic situation continues to deteriorate, Onaiyekan’s words serve as a remin

der that urgent action is needed to address the plight of the middle class and ensure a better future for all Nigerians.
