The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has sounded a dire warning on the deteriorating state of Nigeria, cautioning that the country is on the verge of collapse due to rampant economic hardship, poverty, and insecurity. “The suffering of Nigerians is palpable across every stratum,” said Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, spokesperson for the CNG. “The government’s economic policies have created this dire situation, and it’s imperative that they take responsibility and address the issues urgently.”
The CNG lambasted the government’s handling of the economy, citing stark statistics from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS). “Empirical data from NBS and others reveals that over the past year, key economic indices have worsened with no definitive and evidence-based solutions in sight,” Charanchi noted. He added, “The outcome of the MPC economic policies is a clear manifestation that President Tinubu’s economic team is the worst since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999.”
The CNG condemned the recent increase in interest rates, labeling it a “recipe for disaster” that will further devastate the economy and diminish job prospects. “The experts warned that an increase in interest rates at this moment will stagnate the economy and lead to job losses,” Charanchi said. He continued, “Higher interest rates will not only reduce investments and economic growth but also aggravate the daunting challenges inundating the business environment, leading to factory closures, job losses, and reduced economic activities.”
The group also rejected the plan to increase fuel prices to fund the new national minimum wage, deeming it “cruel and unjustified” given the current economic climate. “Hike in fuel prices will not only overburden the Nigerian workers but also economically pauperize Nigerians,” Charanchi said. “Such a move is cruel and unjustified at a moment when the majority of Nigerians can’t afford a decent meal a day.”
The CNG’s warning comes as Nigeria faces a looming revolt, with widespread discontent and anger simmering among the population. “The dark clouds of imminent massive revolt of citizens against the government are evident,” Charanchi warned. “Cosmetic measures will not suffice to contain the raging anger of the people, particularly when they are inundated by economic hardships, massive hunger, and rampant poverty.”
In a stark message, Charanchi implored the President to “summon the needed political will and courage to urgently address the root cause of these problems” and steer the nation away from the brink of chaos. “We pray that Almighty Allah endows the President with the needed political will and divine wisdom to listen to the cries of the people and steer the nation to safety,” he concluded.
