NCFront, Civil Society and Labour Leaders Unite to Push Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027

…National Dialogue and New Reform Platform to Launch October 1st
A coalition of prominent Nigerians drawn from political, academic, labour and civil society circles is set to launch a nationwide campaign for electoral reforms in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The initiative, spearheaded by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) in partnership with the Labour and Civil Society Front (LCSF), was the outcome of a leadership consultative meeting in Lagos over the weekend.
According to a statement signed by NCFront spokesperson, Mallam Hamisu San Turaki, the move reflects growing consensus on the urgency of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process following resolutions at the recently concluded National Constitutional Summit.
Central to the effort is a National Dialogue on Electoral Reforms scheduled for October 1st, 2025, a date chosen to coincide with Nigeria’s Independence Day. The gathering will mark the formal unveiling of the Alliance for Defence of Democracy (ADD), a reform-driven platform designed to coordinate campaigns, structure mobilization, and sustain momentum for far-reaching changes in the country’s electoral laws.
NCFront explained that the proposed reforms are aimed at restoring credibility to the electoral process, eliminating loopholes that enabled irregularities in past elections, and expanding inclusion to ensure a fairer democratic system.
The coalition has assembled an array of highly regarded leaders of conscience to drive the advocacy, ranging from respected academics and legal practitioners to influential labour leaders, clerics, and civil society champions. Their involvement, the statement noted, will give both legitimacy and impetus to the national campaign.
The dialogue will be addressed by key national figures, including the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, alongside other eminent voices committed to democratic renewal.
NCFront stressed that the campaign is about more than correcting the shortcomings of the 2023 polls. It is, in their words, “a historic opportunity to lay the foundation for a new era of credible, inclusive and people-driven elections in Nigeria.”
With less than two years to the 2027 general elections, the launch of ADD and the October 1st dialogue could signal the beginning of one of the most ambitious citizen-led efforts to safeguard democracy since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999.
