The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday announced a major breakthrough in its campaign to safeguard critical power infrastructure following the arrest of five suspected vandals in Benue State.

According to a statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the suspects, all from Upu Community in Otukpo Local Government Area, were apprehended by local vigilantes on November 3, 2025, while vandalising the Otukpo–Yandev 132kV Single-Circuit transmission line.

Mbah disclosed that the suspects were caught in the act while dismantling towers N16 and N17 in ASA 3 Community, with the damage reportedly extending to eight other towers along the vital transmission line.

“The suspects with dismembered parts of the towers and other materials recovered were handed over to the Benue State Police Command for investigation and prosecution,” the TCN statement read.

The company said the prompt response of the vigilantes and local authorities prevented further damage to the power line, which transmits electricity to several communities across the region.

Despite the attack, TCN confirmed that power supply had been largely restored to affected areas.

“The damaged section of the line has been isolated and bulk power restored to Yandev, Wukari, Takum, and Kashimbila Transmission Substations through the Apir Substation, while the Otukpo Substation is being backfed from the New Heaven Substation,” the statement added.

Expressing appreciation, TCN commended the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, community leaders, youths, and members of the local vigilante group for their swift action and cooperation that led to the arrest of the culprits.

“We commend the community for their support and collaboration in ensuring the protection of national power infrastructure,” Mbah noted, assuring that TCN will sustain its synergy with host communities to forestall future acts of vandalism.

The company reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies and local communities to protect its transmission assets nationwide, stressing that vandalism of electricity infrastructure not only disrupts power supply but also undermines national economic growth and security.

The suspects remain in the custody of the Benue State Police Command, which has commenced investigations into the incident ahead of possible prosecution.
