….As Jonathan, Osinbajo, SGF, Governors and Other Eminent Leaders Lead National Dialogue

A major political summit scheduled for next week in Abuja has dramatically expanded its agenda, placing the recent “open threat” and scathing criticism of Nigeria by United States President Donald Trump at the top of its discussions.

The summit, originally focused on electoral reforms for the 2027 general elections, will now urgently address the implications of Trump’s remarks, which described Nigeria as a “Disgraced Country” over escalating insecurity and killings, and included a “threat of possible military strike.”

Eminent leaders, including former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and several State Governors, are confirmed to lead the National Dialogue, with over 700 accredited delegates set to attend.

Conversion of Crisis into Action
The decision to expand the agenda follows “strong pressure from civil society leaders,” who argue that Trump’s assessment, while harsh, is a “stark indicator” of Nigeria’s rapidly collapsing global image due to disputed election outcomes and legitimacy crises.

Instead of public denial, conveners of the summit have resolved to convert the “moment of anxiety into positive national action” by using the international attention as an entry point for a “grand national declaration” to rebuild electoral trust and political integrity from within.

Star-Studded Convergence

The conference, tagged “National Electoral Reforms Summit for Credible Elections in 2027,” is convened by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) and allied political/civil society groups. It is set for Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 10:00 am at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, under the theme: “Towards Critical and Mandatory Constitutional Amendments for Credible Elections in 2027.”

The summit is to be chaired by former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, while the keynote speaker is former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, GCON.

Other prominent voices confirmed for the multi-stakeholder confab include Prof Attahiru Jega, Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Barr Femi Falana (SAN), Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Prof Pat Utomi, and others. The event will also feature a special panel involving Presidential Aspirants across various party divides, underscoring its non-partisan nature.

Rallying Support for Stability

While addressing the new security concerns, the core mission remains the urgent need to overhaul Nigeria’s electoral foundations.

The summit is designed to “generate consensus around critical constitutional adjustments” to secure transparent results, reduce manipulation and violence, and ensure 2027 elections reflect the “true free will of citizens.”

In light of the renewed international focus, the summit will also “mobilise key friendly nations” to attend the opening session.

Government representation will be robust, with the SGF, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), invited Governors, the INEC Chairman, and the leadership of Constitutional Reform Committees from the National Assembly all joining former leaders and aspirants in addressing the delegates.
