Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, has paid a solemn tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a towering figure whose lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
In a personally signed condolence message released from the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Dr. Matawalle expressed the grief of the entire defence establishment, noting that the passing of the former president was a profound loss not only to his family and the government but to the entire country and the military institution he once led.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, I express our profound sorrow on the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who departed this world on Sunday in a clinic in London, United Kingdom,” the statement read.
Dr. Matawalle extolled Buhari’s exemplary military and political career, highlighting his dedication to discipline, national development, and public service. He noted that Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian military to become a General and served as Nigeria’s Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 before returning to serve as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“His contributions have made him a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s modern political landscape, and his legacy of honour, integrity, patriotism, and unwavering national service will forever be etched in the annals of our nation’s history,” Matawalle stated.
The Minister emphasized Buhari’s enduring belief in a united Nigeria, noting that his leadership inspired generations of Nigerians. “President Muhammadu Buhari embodied discipline and public service. His steadfast belief in a united and indivisible Nigeria inspired countless individuals, including many Nigerians who regarded him as a role model,” he added.
Offering prayers for the repose of the late President’s soul, Dr. Matawalle extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, and the Nigerian people at large.
“May Allah grant his soul Aljanatul Firdaus,” the statement concluded.
President Buhari’s death has drawn a wave of national mourning and tributes, underscoring his influence on the country’s political and military evolution.
