Abuja, Nigeria — In a significant development, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has directed Multichoice Nigeria, the leading Pay-TV operator, to grant subscribers on the DStv and GOtv platforms one month of free subscription. The decision was handed down by a three-man panel led by Justice Thomas Okosu in Abuja.
Multichoice Nigeria had faced legal challenges regarding its pricing policies. Earlier, the tribunal had issued an order preventing the company from increasing subscription fees without proper notice.
Barrister Festus Onifade, who filed the lawsuit, argued that the eight-day notice provided by Multichoice for the price increase was insufficient and unjust to customers.
The ruling on Friday not only requires Multichoice to provide a free month of service to its subscribers but also imposes a fine of N150 million on the company. This penalty was levied due to Multichoice challenging the jurisdiction of the court in the matter.
on the impact of the order, subscribers across Nigeria can now look forward to an additional month of entertainment without any cost as decision also underscores the importance of transparency and consumer rights in the Pay-TV industry in the country.
