Sustained Project Implementation: TCN Boosts Bulk Power Transmission Through Kano Region

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has made undeniable efforts in achieving improved bulk power transmission to the distribution load centers within its Kano Region through continued and sustained project implementation.

The TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement confirmed that “the projects are both greenfield and brownfield in nature and are at different stages of completion, in line with the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP) of the present Management.”

According to the company’s spokesperson, TCN has continued to “show commitment to its grid expansion goal through the execution of projects in the Kano Region and within the nation’s transmission network.

“The transmission projects include the construction of new transmission substations, upgrading the transmission capacity of existing substations, digitization of the control room, and reconductoring transmission lines, among others”, she said.

The Kano Region of TCN spans states in the North West, North East and an International line supplying electricity to Niger Republic.

The states under the Kano Region of TCN include Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states, as well as some parts of Bauchi State, including Gazaoua in Niger Republic.

Recently, the Region took delivery of a number of transformers, their components/accessories and other transmission equipment to complete various projects across its substations.

The statement itemised some of the completed, ongoing and proposed projects within the TCN Kano Region franchise this year to include Kumbotso 330/132/33kV Substation, received 300MVA and 100MVA power transformers for both and 20 truckloads of transformer accessories; Dakata 132/33kV, received and installed a 100MVA power transformer with six truckloads of transformer accessories; and Dan Agundi 132/33kV, received a 100MVA power transformer with six truckloads of transformer consignment. The ongoing projects include the construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kv substation at Danbatta, construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Bichi, construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Kanyi, construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Dangwauro, and construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV transmission at Kankara.

Other ongoing projects are the construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Malumfashi-Katsina, construction of 2x60MVA 132/33KV substation at Dutsimma-Katsina, construction of 330kV transmission line from Kumbotso to Rimin Zakara to Katsina
Construction of 330kV transmission line from Kaduna to Rimin Zakara, installation of 100MVA power transformer at Kumbotso Substation, installation of 100MVA power transformer at Dan Agundi Substation and installation of 150MVA 330/1332/33 kV power transformer at Kumbotso Substation.

Other projects are the ongoing construction/Installation of Dakata and Hadejia line bay
Replacement of 7.5MVA with 60MVA 132/33kV Power Transformer at Hadejia, the construction of Walalambe 132/33kV 2x40MVA Substation at Hotoro, installation of 40MVA 132/33KV Mobile Power transformer at Jama’are, Bauchi, installation of 2x60MVA 132/33kV power transformer with new line bay at Kankia Substation, and construction of 2x150MVA 330/132/33kV and 2x60MVA 132/33kV capacity Substation at Katsina.

Also ongoing is the installation of 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer with a new line bay and control room extension at Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan Agundi Substations, the construction of Kano-Katsina 330kV transmission line, replacement of 150MVA old power transformer with 300MVA power transformer at Kumbotso Substation, and the construction of 2x150MVA and 2x60MVA capacity Rimin Zakara Substation.

Equally ongoing is the replacement of glass insulator with silicon polymer on towers 262 and 264 along Kano-Kankia 132kV transmission line 2 at Kusada Village, Katsina.

The already completed projects are the construction of 2x150MVA 330/132/33kV and 2x60MVA 132/33kV Rimin Zakara Substation, installation of 20/30MVA 132/33kVpower transformer at Bichi Substation
Construction of 1.2km access road and drainage from Bichi Substation to Kano–Katsina Expressway, graveling/chain-link work at Bichi Substation.

Proposed Projects by TCN in the region include construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV Substation at Dangwauro, Kano, construction of 2x150MVA 330/132/33KV substation at Jogana, Kano, construction of 2x150MVA 330/132/33Kv substation at Daura, Katsina, reconductoring of 132kV Line Hadejia, and Katsina line 1, and
reconductoring of 132kV Kumbotso-Dakata transmission line
Reconstruction of Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line, and the construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Gwaram, Jigawa State.

Other proposed projects include construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Birnin-Kudu, Jigawa, the construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Kazaure, also in Jigawa, the construction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Babura, Jigawa, and the onstruction of 2x60MVA 132/33kV substation at Mashi in Katsina State.

The company’s spokesperson disclosed that “TCN is committed to its grid expansion projects and inspite of operational challenges such as insurgency, vandalism and transmission lines Right of Way (RoW) encroachment, TCN is forging ahead with its goal of being one of the best transmission grid.

“It is noteworthy that projects are also ongoing in the ten (10) TCN regions nationwide”, the transmission company assured. Read more stories
