The Deputy Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Amara Iwuanyawu the organiser of the ‘Capacity Care Football Talent Hunt Initiative’, a tournament for young people in his Nwangele State Constituency, and the Special Adviser (SA) to Imo State Governor on Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Cllr. Celia Osakwe-Hibbert were in pitch to spectate at the youth football talent hunt games.
The football initiative was launched to identify, transform and empower grassroots footballers from Nwangele, in the hope to launch them into global soccer careers, with the involvement of the Heartland FC leaders.
The Special Adviser on Diaspora to Imo State Governor was a Special Guest of the Deputy Speaker and arrived in time at the Umuorlu Field, Nwangele Local Government A on Sunday, the 15th of November 2020, with the entourage of the Deputy Speaker to watch the game.
Newly elected Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Paul Emeziem led the entourage in what was seen as his first official public appearance since he was elected the Speaker on Friday the 13th November 2020.
In a chat with newsmen after the first half of the match, the Deputy Speaker noted that it is his desire “to help create opportunities for the youths in my Constituency.
“This is not your ‘every day’ football competition; this one is strategically targeted to drive progression. Heartland Scouts are present here and we hope that some Nwangele youths will play impressively well today”.
The SA Diaspora, who also spoke to journalists immediately after, thanked Hon. Amara Iwuanyawu for thinking constructively, especially with the recent #EndSars protests.
Hon. Cllr. Osakwe-Hibbert stated that she is a firm believer that dreams, aspirations and careers of Imo youngsters can be ‘rehabilitated and recovered’ using the sports platform.
She added, “The ‘Imo Diaspora Athletes Engagement Initiative’, which my Office recently launched, I believe, will also help to harness grassroots talents.”
The Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Dan Ogu was also present to throw his full weight behind the event.
Other notable figures who attended the soccer event are House Majority Leader, Chief Whip, House Members from Ideato, Obowo, and several others as nearly the entire Imo House of Assembly was lifted to Nwangele Local Government Area in an obvious great show of support.
