Dabiri-Erewa, Baderin, Ahmad Stress Importance of Good Leadership as Tool for National Development

By JAMES EZEMA

The trio of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, National Missioner of Ansar-Ud- Deen Society of Nigeria and a Professor of Law, University of London, Prof. Mashood Baderin, all stressed the need for good leadership as a panacea to national development.

They made these submissions at a webinar organised by the National
Council of Nigeria Muslim Organisations (UK and Ireland) moderated by
Imam Bashir Zubair to mark the 60th independence of Nigeria on the
Concept of Leadership in Islam.

The NiDCOM boss, who was a special guest of honour, said that everyone
must be prepared for the position of leadership and not leave it in the
hands of charlatans.

She said that without followership there would not have been leadership,
hence the need for cooperation and working together for the emergence of
a patriotic leader.

She added that the concept of leadership in Islam, is a trust (amana)
which every leader must live up to.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for providing a dynamic
leadership for the citizenry through his three point agenda, She told
the participants mostly Diasporans, to be law abiding and be good
ambassadors of Nigeria.

She used the opportunity to rolled out the achievements of NIDCOM within
a year of establishment and other programmes meant for the Diasporans.

In his lecture, Prof. Mashood Baderin stated that celebrating 60th
Independence of Nigeria Implies that the country was under the
leadership of another country.

He defined leadership as a necessary social factor for peace and order
and a vital tool for development, saying that leadership is not strange
to Islamic history and culture.

Baderin emphasised that leadership is a critical factor for the success
and failure of any Nation, especially when it is mismanaged and wrongly
applied.

Speaking in the same vein, Sheikh Abdur Rahman Ahmad dwelled on how an
unfair or selfish leadership leads to chaos and deny the nation of the expected development.

While lamenting the ineptitude of the past leaders in undermining National development, he advised all stakeholders to fear Allah as everyone will give account of their deeds on the day of judgement.

Highlights of the webinar conference include interactive sessions from
Nigeria Muslims in UK and Ireland with all the invited guests on the way
forward for Nigerians living outside the country.
